Abstract :
In a societal context where it struggles to make its voice heard, the Church, as a fragile institution of the gathered people of God, must take care of itself despite the many crises it is facing. Drawing on its institutional weakness – which, paradoxically, gives it its strength, according to Pauline logic (2 Cor 12) – and rooted in a realm beyond this world – the risen Christ, who has always gone before it – it must be able to draw upon its very foundation in order to fulfil its prophetic vocation: to proclaim to the world what it needs to hear, without hesitating to unsettle it and hold it to account. Rejecting the initial temptation of self-centred rigidity – always possible, never desirable – it is called to open itself without fear, reaching beyond itself, and resolutely pursuing its evangelising mission to the ends of the earth, ‘without shadow or disturbance’ (Ps 33).
